Harold's Healthy Lunchbox Cooking Competition

A big thanks to Mrs Hunter for all her help training up our Year 8 team that entered the Harold's Healthy Lunchbox competition this year. Our Vietnamese spring rolls and mango dipping sauce were amazing. Unfortunately on the day our honey muesli slice had some issues.

Harold’s Healthy Lunchbox Competition

What is it?
Harold’s Healthy Lunchbox is a competition run by the Hawke’s Bay Life Education Trust for primary (Year 4-6) and intermediate school (Year 7-8) aged children in the region. As we work to tackle the biggest epidemic to threaten children this century – obesity, the competition aims to teach children about a balanced diet, meal planning and understanding the nutrients their body needs in a fun and hands on environment.
How does it work?
From a list of wholesome ingredients teams of four will get creative and submit a selection recipes to create and prepare a healthy school lunchbox. Teams then turn up on competition day, where they will have one hour in a commercial kitchen to cook and present what they have submitted. Students will work under the supervision of a professional chef and tertiary level hospitality students in a safe environment, but must be accompanied by a teacher.
Teams will be judged on;
  • Their explanation of food choices including nutritional value and costings
  • An action plan for preparation outlining responsibilities
  • Successful teamwork and safe hygienic kitchen practice
  • Lunchbox packaging and presentation
  • Taste, variety and nutritional value
