A lot of aroha has gone into creating our paddles this term.
Our paddles have four parts and represent our learning journey.
Kakau: the kakau/handle must be sturdy and checked for splits or cracks, which can weaken the hoe. We must check that we have all the things we need to be successful.

Tinana: the tinana/body can take many different shapes and lengths. It is used to drive the hoe through the water. We must drive our own learning path.

Rapa: The rapa/blade is the most visible part of the hoe and can be covered with carvings that show ownership. We must take ownership of our own learning and know what we are learning and why.

Koinga: the koinga/tip is the point of impact of the hoe as it meets the water. We must make the decisions to take our learning where we know we will learn the best and teach others.

Students have scrubbed, sanded and undercoated recycled wood before adding their own personal designs. The wood actually came from genuine Twyford apple bins so is a nice tie in to where we come from.
Students carefully chose colours which represented themselves, their families and their interests. We also all included at least one line from our pepeha, along with motivational phrases or quotes.
